Gaining access to a computer locked by the PINsafe GINA

  1. Reboot your computer
  2. As soon as it starts, press F8 to get the startup option menu
  3. Choose "Safe Mode", which will probably be the first option on the menu
  4. Once the computer has started up, run "regedit"
  5. Navigate to the following key: \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
  6. Locate the entry named "ginadll". Rename it to something else, for example "ginadll_off".
  7. Exit regedit and reboot your computer normally.

You should now get the normal Windows logon prompt.

If you want to re-enable the PINsafe GINA, go back into regedit, and rename the value back to "ginadll". It is suggested that you also set the value of "PINsafeAllowDefaultLogin" (in the same key) to 1 (create a new string value with this name, if it does not already exist). This will ensure that, if your computer is unable to locate the PINsafe server, it will use the standard login.
